Johnny Depp Named Most Overpaid Actor by Forbes for Second Straight Year

For the second straight year, Johnny Depp has been labeled by Forbes as Hollywood’s most overpaid actor. To calculate the names on the list, Forbes examined the last three movies an actor has starred in prior to June, then calculated the operating income of those films and then divided that by the actor’s pay for those films. The final number is the return on investment the studio gets for hiring the actor. Depp sits atop the list, with Will Smith coming in at second and Channing Tatum placing third.

According to Forbes’ model, Depp returns about $2.80 for each dollar he’s paid. So, while profit is still being made off the Pirates of the Caribbean star, it pales in comparison to what other leading men bring in. For example, while someone like Leonardo DiCaprio sits at 8th on the list, he returns about $9.90 for each $1 he’s paid. That means that, according to this model, Depp is about 3.5x more overpaid than DiCaprio is.

Depp isn’t the only actor to top this list two times in a row. In 2013 and 2014, Adam Sandler had the distinction to be called the Most Overpaid Actor in Hollywood. Sandler currently sits at 6th on this list.
